Level Check by Playback

While you may feel confident that everything is proceeding well with the recording process it is always wise to actually verify the recording by playing back the sound from the recording device.  Many things can go wrong in the chain from the sound source to the recorder.

Noise and distortion can occur, a bad cable can add its own kind of unwanted noise, connections can be bad, etc. Or the more subtle sonic qualities of the recorded sound can be less than desired. You may want to re-record the sound after making some adjustments in microphone selection and placement. Or the eq settings on the mixer may be used to bring the recorded result closer to your ideal.
