Preamp, preamplifier

In an audio system, a preamp is the name given the first amplifier to accept the signal from a transducer such as a microphone.  Preamps amplify a very weak signal to create a line level signal.  They must amplify the signal with  a minimum of additional noise and they must maintain the original shape of the sound wave (i.e. not distort it).  Microphone preamps can be found in mixers*, audio and video recorders and as stand alone devices.  Mic preamps usually have balanced inputs (xlr type connectors) though lower end, home entertainment devices may use 1/4 inch  or 1/8th inch phone sockets.
