Quantization

In digital systems the continuous analogue signal is converted into discrete steps - quantization.

 

This process will inevitably create some noise. The more steps in the quantization process, the more closely the digital information will resemble the original signal.

Quantization error can be heard in systems which use less than 16 bits (64,535 discrete steps) i.e. 8 bit or 256 step systems.
