The River's Third Bank

"a dimension where dualisms have disappeared"
Luiz Fernando Valente

The RIver's Third bank is a four channel live performance work for computer system and guitars. The music is a mix of fretless guitar, MIDI guitar, frequency modulation synthesis, granulated guitar samples and pre-recorded sounds. Some of the sounds for this work were recorded on the Ganges river in Varanasi, India on April 21, 2006. The synthesis is driven by an algorithmic composition system that uses a Markov process and derives its output from the performer. The MIDI guitar is played using a variety of alternative techniques (bow, "ebow", mallets, other objects) while the fretless is played in a more conventional manner.

Premiered at the Simon Fraser University Theatre Nov. 10th, 2006. Concert, "Overtones and Undercurrents" curated by Barry Truax. This research supported by SSHRC and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, SFU.
