FPA 260 Studio in Visual Art I

This studio course is intended to assist students in developing a strong foundation for and understanding of artistic practice in a mature studio environment. Working with the constraints of assigned projects as well as budgets, available time, materials and facilities, students will explore the material, intellectual and technical challenges posed by these projects. Students are required to complete five studio projects. As well, students will be assigned two exhibitions to visit during the semester and will be required to write a 3-5 page response to each exhibition. Class time will be primarily devoted to working on projects and to regular group critique sessions. Students should expect to spend at least 6 hours a week working outside of class time on their projects, and to actively participate in and contribute to the critiques. Work must be finished and ready for presentation by the deadline, not the crit, unless otherwise specified.

Participation in crits and studio work will be evaluated on the basis of quality not quantity. Studio practice, which is covered in the Studio Practice Guidelines, to be handed out in the first week of classes, basically means, how you keep your space, look after tools, take responsibility for equipment and the general respect for other's work and the shared studio space at Alexander Center.
