Want to know how to play this game? To put it plain and simple: Don't. Die. Then again that's not too descriptive. In fact, that's the aim of most games. To be more specific: Eat, and don't be Eaten. Still not descriptive enough? Fine, fine, here it is:
You're a Shinigami (that's japanese for "Death God", except it sounds cooler) who drew the short straw for his next job assignment. You're mission is to take the form of a fish and reap all the dead fishie souls out in the big ol' blue. But since you're not used to your new form, you're going to be pretty weak and small. That means you have to eat up the smaller souls first so you can get bigger, and until then the big ones will be able to eat you instead! So remember: Eat, and don't be Eaten!
Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, not quite. Seems like there's an over-abundance of those little fishie souls since a pretty hungry shark has been prowling the area. But that shouldn't worry you too much, right? I mean, things in the world of the living can't see the souls of the dead, right? Weeeell, not quite. Every once in a while that shark will get a wiff of you. They've got extra senses for that kinda thing, y'know? But no worries, you're still a shinigami and that means you can fight back! All you have to do is bite his tail a few times and he's a goner. Just remember, bite the tail, not the head (that thing's got a set of teeth you won't win against ;P).
Anyways, they'll be able to pick up on you every now and then. Their eyes will glow a fierce red and that's your cue to hightail (highfin?) it out of there. That shark won't stop chasing you until it eats himself a fishie soul, though that doesn't mean it has to be your soul ;)
Now that you know what's going on in this game, the only thing I have to say is go give it a try! See how big you can get, and how many points you rack up!
After you have loaded the game, you will automatically be redirected to a short tutorial on the basic controls of your fishie, and what to expect from the other inhabitants of the fishie world.
Should, at any point during your gameplay, you feel the need to go back to the tutorial by clicking on the "Tutorial" button on the bottom left hand side of the screen. If you want to change any of the settings in the game (turn on/off SFX/music, change background images, restart your game, or quit) you can press the "Pause" button on the bottom right hand side of the screen. This pause menu can also be accessed by pressing the 'Space Bar' on your keyboard.
| Action | Reaction |
|---|---|
| Arrows (left, right, up, down) | Move your fish (the pure black one in the middle) in that direction |
| Spacebar | Pause the game and bring up the settings menu |
| Mouse | The mouse can be used to activate buttons or other out-of-game features |
So, what can you expect in the future? Well, I'm not that sure actually. There are some ideas for the game itself, like adding levels and expanding the game to reflect the story that goes along with it. Honestly I don't think I will be able to implement many of those ideas. I've got fresh, new ideas that are more important than expanding this already completed project.
This doesn't mean I've abandoned this game though. One thing I do plan on doing is integrating this applet with the elemental theme of this webpage. Exactly how I do that will remain a secret for now ;)
