Fall 2016
ENSC 220
ELECTRIC CIRCUITS I

September 12, 2016:

  • Rules and regulations, bill of rights (Canadian way), whom to contact in case there is a misconduct (upward chain of command: instructor, undergraduate curriculum chair, director, student union ombudsperson)
  • Introduction: pre-requisites and co-requisites, topics to be covered in this course, assignments and labs, on plagiarism.
  • Textbooks and why are they only recommended for this course. Library reserves. Remarks regarding the old ENSC 220 notes.
  • ENSC 220 web site, email correspondence, caucus conference, office hours, audio-recordings of lectures.

  • Motivation: why should we study electric circuits and learn circuit theory?
  • Models vs. physical components: how good is a model?
  • International System (SI) of units
  • Circuit variables: charge, current, voltage, energy, and power.
  • Models of circuit elements: resistors, diodes, transistors, independent sources, four types of dependent sources
  • Diode (D) as an example of a nonlinear resistive element: ideal switch, exponential (Esaki) diode, Zener diode, tunnel diode
  • Resistive circuits, memoryless elements, and algebraic equations
  • Circuits with inductors and capacitors, elements with memory, and algebraic equations
  • Classification: lumped (R, L, C) and distributed (transmission lines) circuits
  • Classification: passive and active circuit elements (resistors, inductors, capacitors, diodes, independent and dependent sources)
  • Circuits and graph theory: a forgotten link
  • Kirchhoff Current Law (KCL) and Kirchhoff Voltage Law (KVL)

    Lab:
  • Forming lab teams (teams of 3)
  • Lab: Orientation Part 1 - PS and DMM. Lab report due on September 18, 2016 (midnight)
