Discussion (cont’) Importance of Prioritizing IP Packets
If packet senders fairly classify and prioritize their packets based on their traffic requirement, ISPs can use priority information of each packet to:
- Provide end-to-end Quality-of-Service between the sender and the receiver;
- Maximize their network utilization by allocating resources to packets based on their priorities;
- Segment traffic with different priorities and provide QoS treatment to them accordingly;
- Minimize impacts to packets with higher priorities during network failures.
