WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?:
- There are many definitions or, better, descriptions of sustainability according to subject. One such description of sustainable development is mentioned in the Brundtland Report: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCDE, 1987).
- Sustainable development is nowadays the goal, in words at least, of most politicians and decision makers.
- Sustainability is difficult to define or measure because it is an inherently vague and complex concept.
- Although sustainability is a goal for international and national policy-makers, there is no measuring yardstick against which to assess practical policy (WCDE, 1987; Hinterberg et al., 1997).
