Motivation
Current Internet provides best-effort service.
Emerging real-time multimedia applications require quality of service guarantees.
Overprovisioning is not cost-effective.
Deployment of IntServ and DiffServ models is related with serious obstacles:
- all-or-nothing upgrade
- dramatic changes to network operations
Internet2 QoS working group abandoned deployment and testing of DiffServ Premium service in 2001.
Focus is shifted toward lightweight QoS approaches, such as non-elevated services.
