Motivation

• Current Internet provides best-effort service.

• Emerging real-time multimedia applications require quality of service guarantees.

• Overprovisioning is not cost-effective.

• Deployment of IntServ and DiffServ models is related with serious obstacles:

  • all-or-nothing upgrade
  • dramatic changes to network operations

• Internet2 QoS working group abandoned deployment and testing of DiffServ Premium service in 2001.

• Focus is shifted toward lightweight QoS approaches, such as non-elevated services.
