• New concept of service differentiation in Internet

• Defines two service classes:

  • throughput-sensitive (TS)
  • delay-sensitive (DS)

• DS class receives lower queuing delay but possibly lower throughput compared to best effort.

• Suitable for real-time applications, such as IP telephony and video conferencing

• TS class receives at least the same throughput but longer delay compared to best effort.

• Suitable for TCP-based bulk data transfer

• An application may choose between TS and DS class by setting ToS field in IP header
