New concept of service differentiation in Internet
Defines two service classes:
- throughput-sensitive (TS)
- delay-sensitive (DS)
DS class receives lower queuing delay but possibly lower throughput compared to best effort.
Suitable for real-time applications, such as IP telephony and video conferencing
TS class receives at least the same throughput but longer delay compared to best effort.
Suitable for TCP-based bulk data transfer
An application may choose between TS and DS class by setting ToS field in IP header
