Problems

• Large RTT and RTT variation:

  • wireless link properties
  • mobility increases RTT and RTO
  • protocols, such as link layer retransmission, increases RTT and RTT variation

• They cause increased value of RTO:

  • congestion is detected by timeouts (defined by RTO)

• Result: slower response to TCP congestion control
