BURNABY, B.C. — In a historic, whiplash-inducing development for Simon Fraser University, executive leadership has announced the creation of the SFU Stevens Family School of Law. Effective immediately, all administrative enthusiasm, institutional priorities, and media inquiries previously directed toward the university’s new medical school are being formally reallocated to the legal program.
The sudden shift follows a revised bequest from philanthropists Ratana and Arran Stevens, who confirmed this morning that they are revoking their naming rights for the School of Medicine and transferring their landmark $41-million gift directly to establish the School of Law.
"While training doctors to address British Columbia's primary-care crisis felt important for a brief couple of months, we quickly realized that what society really needs right now is more lawyers," said Arran Stevens in a joint statement. "When you weigh the benefits of preventive medicine against the sheer thrill of administrative litigation, contract dispute, and judicial review, the path forward becomes undeniable."
A New Institutional Era
Under the new arrangement, the Stevens Family School of Law will become the crowning jewel of SFU’s academic ecosystem. University leadership praised the transition as a bold leap forward in visual branding, donor alignment, and institutional focus.
"We want to be perfectly clear: the School of Medicine is fine, but law is where the real buzz is," noted SFU President Joy Johnson. "Medical degrees take years of clinical rotations, whereas legal education allows us to immediately debate policy in high-ceilinged mock courtrooms. Moving our institutional spotlight to the Stevens Family School of Law aligns perfectly with our vision of being Canada's most engaged—and legally protected—university."
To accommodate the rapid transfer of capital, construction crews at the Surrey campus were seen early Friday morning swapping out stethoscope delivery boxes for gilded gavels and leather-bound copies of tort law casebooks before noon.
Tim Hortons Steps in to Anchor Medical Program
To ensure the medical school continues functioning despite losing its namesake benefactor, SFU has secured a new corporate naming partner. Moving forward, the medical faculty will be officially rebranded as the Tim Hortons Camp Day School of Medicine.
The medical school’s operating budget will be funded entirely through proceeds generated by Tim Hortons’ annual "Camp Day" promotions, alongside micro-donations collected from rounded-up loose change at drive-thru windows across Western Canada.
| Faculty | Sponsorship / Naming | Primary Funding Mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| School of Law (Top Priority) | Stevens Family | $41 Million Philanthropic Gift |
| School of Medicine (Secondary) | Tim Hortons Camp Day | Coffee Sales & Spare Change Round-Ups |
While curriculum adjustments for the newly minted Tim Hortons Camp Day School of Medicine are still being finalized, faculty members confirmed that future doctors will receive specialized instruction in fast-paced triage environments, high-volume caffeine distribution, and handling heat-related steam burns.
"We are thrilled to welcome Tim Hortons into the fold," Johnson added. "In many ways, a Double-Double and a box of Timbits do just as much for immediate public morale as a standard health checkup. It's a natural fit."
Inaugural applications for the Stevens Family School of Law open next week, while medical school applicants are advised to submit their cover letters printed directly onto the back of a Tim Hortons receipt.
