This blog archives my performance on gramle, a Wordle-style spectrogram game. The goal of this blog is to help phonetics students and fellow gramle lovers see one phonetician’s thought process.

Original Spectrogram

Original

Step 1: Segmentation

Segmentation

Everything here is very sonorant. It looks like at the veeerrrry beginning there is a release burst. However, the rest of the segmentation is based on amplitude differences and the dipping of formants. That's why there's more than 5.

Step 2: Voicing

Voicing

It looks like the voice bar goes through the whole word, which makes sense given how sonorant it is.

Step 3: Manner of Articulation

Manner of Articulation

There are 3 clues to mannerj of articulation. The first is that release burst. The second is the dipping of formants especially F3 in the middle. The last is the white space near the back half of the word.

Step 4: Formants

Formants

F2 is low throughout here, which suggests back vowels or at least lower vowels.

Rapid fire guesses

Here are my guesses:

  1. -d -æ !m -ɪ -ŋ
  2. +b -r !ɑ !m -t
  3. +b +ɑ -l +ə +m
  4. +b +ɑ +ɾ +ə +m
