1. "Open Source for Educational Software" begins today!
.......................................................

February 5 - 24, 2001

What does open source mean to you? Who benefits and how? Join us in this GEN
seminar to explore:
- issues around intellectual property in online education
- licensing options
- culture, attitudes, and traditions
- expectations, risks and deceptions
- benefits of getting involved

Does this sound like a seminar just for programmers? You're right, it's not!
All educators should be involved in shaping the tools they use! Join our
facilitators: Bruno Vernier, Griff Richards, Frances Long, and Claudio Orea
for a dynamic (and multilingual!) discussion on Open Source.

This is part 1 of a 2-part series on Open Source. Part I will help us to lay
a foundation by exploring terminology, issues, and possibilities. Then we'll
build on this in Part II, TeleLearning NCE Open Source initiatives.

Access the seminar directly at:

2. Online Learning Consortia
.......................................................

What a great beginning for 2001! Thanks to Paul Bacsich, Alan Davis, and
Joanne Curry, we are much further ahead in our understanding of what
contributes to successful online learning consortia.

For a summary of seminar topics and resources maintained by GEN member Bruno
Vernier, follow this link:

4. GEN site access
.......................................................

Some of our GEN members recently reported receiving "server not found"
messages when attempting to access GEN seminars. We believe the problem has
been resolved. However, until we complete our maintenance work, you may be
prompted to provide your username and password twice while being directed to
a new URL. To prevent this, update your GEN site bookmark after logging in.

Thanks so much to those of you who helped investigate the problems and offer
solutions.

5. New Research & Design Project Underway
.......................................................

Heidi Lam, an engineering student working with Dr. John Dill at Simon Fraser
University, is designing a new way to display and organize messages.
Building on the features of CZWeb, a graphical web navigation and knowledge
management tool, Heidi is working on an automatic and user-defined visual
organization of messages and "detail-in-context" displays. Heidi will be
analyzing GEN seminar contributions, and working with GEN members, to
determine needs and trends, and try out her design ideas.

The GEN Research Special Interest Group is for members interested in
advancing our community.
