Last day to apply as intervenor on proposed pipeline through Kinder Morgan
Hi everyone,
Tomorrow, September 24, is the deadline to apply to the National Energy Board as an "intervenor" on Kinder Morgan's application to tunnel a new pipeline through Burnaby Mountain. This morning I learned that SFUFA will not be applying as a group intervenor before the deadline. As employees who will be directly affected by the proposed pipeline, however, we can apply individually and I encourage you to do so today.
The website for the application is below--you have to register with a login and it takes about 15 minutes to complete the application. Apply as an intervenor rather than as a commenter:

Everyone will have their own opinions and ideas about how they would be "directly affected" by the new pipeline. In my application I wrote about the worsened air quality (and health effects) that tripled marine tanker traffic would have on SFU employees after the pipeline comes in; I also wrote about how a major pipeline spill, or an explosion at what would be a vastly expanded tank farm on the flank of the mountain, could shut down the university indefinitely--not being able to come to work would be certainly be a "direct effect". And if you use the trails in the forest for your commute or during your lunch hour, disruption and destruction in the conservation area would be another way you could be directly affected.
Best,
Jeremy
