Private Members Bill to reintroduce the Mandatory Long Form Census

Hi Everyone,

As you know the Mandatory Long Form Census (MLFC) was replaced by the National Household Survey (NHS) for the 2011 Census year. The NHS has proven to be limited in its use for researchers given its poor response rate.

Ted Hsu, the MP for Kingston and the Islands has tabled a private members Bill (Bill c-626) which is currently being debated and will come to a vote likely in February 2015. Information on the Bill, including current status and full text is available from http://www.parl.gc.ca/LegisInfo/BillDetails.aspx?Language=E&billId=6695099&Mode=1&View=5 and further information from Mr. Hsu is available from his website here: http://www.tedhsu.ca/C626/

Mr. Hsu has contacted several of my librarian colleagues and asked we raise awareness of his private members Bill to encourage those interested in a return to the MLFC contact their MPs and professional associations to advocate on its return.

Please forward this email to colleagues you know work with Census data; you can write your MPs and you can encourage your professional associations to advocate a return to the MLFC.

Thanks,

Carla
