What do you do with old research equipment?

Hello—I understand that one is generally not allowed to sell equipment purchased with research funds (or at least internal funds). 

But I’m wondering if there is any way to do so—it seems a real waste to simply hold on to gear that is no longer of use and not be able to reinvest money from its sale into current or ongoing research.

I didn’t see anything on the VPR website, though perhaps I’ve overlooked it. I’ve been known not to see car keys and hats and jars of pickles even though they were right before my eyes...
