Re: Retraction Watch - Tracking retractions as a window into the scientific process

Hi Neil,

I missed the piece last night so can't speak to the particulars covered. There is a solution, however, and that is for researchers to practice good data management hygiene so not only can they themselves can access their data down the road but so others can do so, too.

You'll be happy to learn the SFU Library has developed support for research data management for SFU researchers including guidelines on how to manage data and providing a place to deposit data: Radar

Currently we have data sets from Computing Science, Economics, Archaeology and Cognitive Science in Radar and we expect these collections to grow.

If you, or any other SFU researchers, have questions about data management, data deposit, please contact our data management team at data-services@sfu.ca

Thanks very much for raising this issue.

Subject: Retraction Watch - Tracking retractions as a window into the scientific process

Peter Mansbridge reported on the National last night that up to 50% of scientific journal articles are fraudulent including being based on data sets that turn out not to exist. There is a snowballing of retractions even by top journals.

Next time my paper is rejected at a top journal in favour of something really stellar, I will wonder if the odds are 50/50 my competitor cheated.

It's really an indictment of our profession.

And as a reviewer, what can I do? I see the article but not the data set. Even if the solution was to send the data set and I had the time to look st it, how would I know it wasn't computer generated?
