The SFU Library and Key, SFU's Big Data Initiative, are organizing a Data Love-In this Thursday, May 18th. What, you may ask, is a Data Love-In? It's a daylong celebration of research data beginning with workshops to help you on the right path to a lifelong relationship with your data. It's also conversations around the benefits of well-loved data.
The Data Love-In aims to provide a venue to highlight the benefits of well curated data beginning with morning workshops on Cleaning Data with 'R' and Fundamentals of Data Management Planning.
The afternoon begins with keynote Dhavide Aruliah's talk "Why Data?” We hear about data---specifically big data and data science---fairly often now, but why? What is particularly special about the present day that makes data prominent in public discourse? My goal in this talk is to retrace recent technological trends and events from recent memory to get a better grasp on these questions. Dhavide is Director of Training at Continuum Analytics, the company behind Anaconda---the leading Open Data Science platform powered by Python.
Following Dhavide's Keynote, we will feature Dugan O'Neil (Physics/Compute Canada), Peter Hall (Urban Studies), Karen Kavanagh (Physics) and Peter Chow-White (Communication) discussing "Why should you love your data? The benefits of well-curated data"
