Accounting types love the word ‘accountability’ because it has the word ‘count’ in
it. Academics are always being told by administrators that everything about them and their work has to be counted in order to be ‘accountable’ to the general public. But who is holding the administrators accountable? Politicians at least are held somewhat
accountable when the voters boot them out of office after their more profitable business contracts have been secured. But the Microsoft Office Certified administrators who populate the millions of square feet taken up by all the cubicles and offices in the
government ministries and agencies– not to mention all that prime real estate in universities and colleges that could otherwise be repurposed for classrooms and lab space– who is measuring them?
