Statement condemning violent arrest of Black SFU alumnus

Apologies for cross-posting

Colleagues,

Last week on SFU’s Burnaby campus, a Black alumnus was racially profiled and violently arrested. The actions taken by SFU Safety & Risk Services are being justified as pandemic response and President Johnson stated in her email communication that there will be no “full public debrief of events.” This response is unacceptable. If SFU intends to fulfill its EDI commitments, if it hopes to do anything more than issue empty statements, and – most importantly – if it is genuinely invested in creating a safe environment for Black students, faculty, staff, and community members, we must demand more.

Please consider signing this statement condemning the violent arrest of a Black SFU alumnus and sharing with your networks. There is a link at the top of the document for people to submit their names to be added.

Thank you,
