Contract Worker Justice @SFU campaign

Dear colleagues,

I’d like to share news of the Contract Worker Justice @SFU campaign, which launched yesterday. Contract Worker Justice @SFU is a coalition of workers, faculty, students and community members working to end the outsourcing of cleaning and food services at SFU.

Outsourcing of these essential campus services has generated a low-wage, insecure, precarious workforce which could not be more different demographically than the university’s highest-paid employees. Cleaners and food service workers on our SFU campuses are primarily women, people of colour, and immigrants. They have suffered layoffs and intensified precarity as a result of the pandemic.

Yesterday morning we delivered an open letter signed by 80 faculty members to President Joy Johnson & VP Finance & Admin Martin Pochurko asking that SFU end its practice of outsourcing food and cleaning services and begin the process of planning to take the services back in house. The letter, which is attached, summarizes our findings in a comparison of the collective agreements of contract workers at SFU and those of workers performing similar work in-house at UBC and UVic. Not surprisingly SFU contract cleaners and food service workers fare much worse in every respect. As a community we can and must do better by these workers.

Here are a few ways you can follow and support the campaign:

	• Sign our open letter to SFU's president and share widely with colleagues, SFU community members, and allies: https://forms.gle/6XQm9C4o1ZuoPVxr5
