The UBC AMS (the student society) sent a letter to the Board and the Executive either late last week or early this week demanding more protection. They are unhappy with the current model, saying (and my number might be wrong ) that a very large majority of students favour mandatory vaccinations, at least in residence, and the requirement for masks in lectures. (similar to UofT and others.)

"UBC students are looking to their University’s leadership to go beyond the bare minimum by taking the extra measures of mandating vaccinations in student residences, mandating masks in lecture halls, and clearly addressing community concerns to ensure the place students call home feels safe enough to be their home."

Dear UBC Executives and the Board of Governors, On behalf of the Alma Mater Society (AMS) of UBC, we are writing in regards to the health, safety, and well-being of the UBC Community as we return to campus this fall. On July 21st, 2021, the AMS Council unanimously passed a motion to call on the…

Hi Lyn--What's the UBC AMS example you mention? I'm not familiar with it (and honestly haven't been following the issue too too closely, and selfishly so, since the large class I am teaching this fall is online.)

ALso, I didn't mean to imply that you were demanding from the univ. things they cannot provide; it's that there have been more than a few emails talking about how the university is not protecting us, as if it were their decision. That said, they sure could push back more against the ministry.

Thanks
Chris

Agreed. But look at the example from the UBC AMS. Perhaps we should be organizing pressure ourselves.

Regarding frustration with the university's lack of a vaccine requirement: my understanding, which might be incorrect, is that SFU must follow provincial direction on any vaccine mandate. That direction comes from the Ministry of Health and the Min. of Adv. Education, or whatever it's called these days.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

So if faculty and staff want to pressure the university to implement a vaccine requirement, pressure would have to be applied to the university and to the relevant levels of government.

Such requirements are common in the US.
