Re: Fossil fuel use at SFU

I think the central point here is that we as humans need to stop using fossil fuels. They're non-sustainable and our use of them is damaging the planet (and our species, when fast travel allows disease to spread more easily).

We know a bunch of things we can do as individuals to reduce our use of fossil fuels, for example

- have an electric car or no car; walk, take transit, ride a bike;

- don't buy single-use plastic/reduce our plastic use as much as we can;

- reduce our air travel;

- buy locally grown food and grow our own.

We know a bunch of things we can do as citizens to reduce our society's use of fossil fuels, for example

- protest, sign petitions, make our stand clear in public speech;

- vote for parties and candidates most likely to try to reduce fossil fuel use by governments and corporations;

- spend wisely, watch where our investments go, and donate money to good causes.

I am happy to hear that SFU is divesting from fossil fuels and that we have a biomass generator. I'm trying to make only one or two trips by air a year. I don't own a car. I was in the middle of a no-single-use-plastic challenge when the pandemic hit and made it next to impossible to continue.

But I can do better, and I can do more.
