Dear colleagues, I’m writing to invite you to an event on Burnaby Mountain next week—Wednesday, June 29—in support of contract workers on campus. It’s looking like the administration will present a proposal to the Board of Governors (which is meeting that morning) to address the situation of contract food and cleaning services workers at SFU. Contract Worker Justice is hoping for the best (our demands are here) but we are also wanting to show that we will not go away until the university walks the walk on EDI and meaningfully improves situation of the lowest paid, mostly racialized, and overwhelmingly immigrant, low-waged workforce on campus. While they’re at it they could also negotiate w research assistants who have been without a contract for three years since their bargaining unit was recognized. Contract Worker Justice @SFU and the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) will be hosting a free breakfast in front
of Halpern Centre at SFU Burnaby campus from 7-10 AM, where profs will cook breakfast for contract workers. The
Board of Governors Meeting is held early, so we will be cooking pancakes for those who will be present. Come get your day started with a free, warm breakfast and some
collective action! It would be especially meaningful to have a good contingent of faculty helping out, but staff are more than welcome too so please do forward widely to colleagues in your units. The event is early—but so are the morning shifts food service workers must be on campus for, and cleaning services workers on the nightshift will only be getting off work at that hour so you can greet them after a long shift and show them we care. See you next week I hope! Please email me off-list for any questions you might have.
