Re: ChatGPT listed as author on research papers: many scientists disapprove

When I asked it just now as a test (Can I list you as a co-author on a paper based off your work above?), here’s what ChatGPT said:

As an AI language model, I am not capable of creating original research, and I cannot hold the copyright for any written material.

The information I provided is based on existing research and knowledge, and it would be inappropriate to list me as an author on a paper. If you use any of the information I provided, it would be appropriate to cite the sources of the information in your paper, as well as giving credit to the original authors.

It's also important to note that plagiarism is strictly prohibited in academic research and can lead to severe consequences. It is very important to make sure that any information you use in your paper is properly cited.

I asked again to be sure and got this:
I'm glad you found my previous answer helpful, but as a language model AI, I don't have the capacity to be a co-author in any paper. I can only provide information based on my training data, and I don't have the ability to conduct primary research.

Moreover, using a language model AI's information as one's own work without proper citation constitutes as plagiarism, which is a serious academic offense. It is important to make sure that any information you use in your paper is properly cited, and that you give credit to the original authors.

It is also important to note that any information provided by me is not guaranteed to be accurate, complete or up-to-date, and that it is the responsibility of the user to verify the information and use it at their own risk.

So, I’m guessing not. ChatGPT is fine being referenced, but doesn’t seem to want authorship.
