Re: In defence of the (tedious) student essay (The Globe and Mail (BC Edition)), Sep 04, 2023

The environmental impacts aren't just from AI processing, of course, though that's adding to it. Every time we stream a show or store something on "the cloud"--which isn't in a cloud but an economically precarious place where the company can use local power and water for without employing locals--we're contributing to a carbon footprint bigger than the airline industry's and growing.

That's sliding off topic, though. I totally support the writing process as teaching/practicing thinking claim.

What a great article, Gerardo! Thank you for sharing. Writing = thinking. Whether you are revising your own work or starting something new, the process is a major part of the point, and you will miss out on the leap into knowledge if you leave it out.

I came across this interesting perspective recently. I hadn't actually been aware of the environmental repercussions of AI until I read this:

Dear colleagues: I particularly liked this article about the university essay in today’s Globe and Mail. I am sending it in response to Steve DiPola’s request for suggestions.
