On the history of teaching assistants in the academe?

Dear all,

           I have been wondering about the history of employing students as teaching assistants, and would be grateful for any pointers to any reading on this.    

            I came across the report below, which was fascinating. But it is focussed primarily on US graduate schools.  I wondered where, when and why the concept of teaching assistants originated.
