FYI: gmail to SFU email rejection - IT changed a setting and tdid not tell us

Gmail to SFU email getting rejected or bouncing?  read on

Many of us faculty and students ( literally 1000s and 1000s), use our gmail account to connect to the SFUmail (OWS)  to send and receive email. I have had scores of rejected email in the last few weeks - worse they only announce the rejection days later. I finally found out that SFU IT ( because of a spam issues) changed a port on the gmail forwarding settings ( was 465 - now is 25 and TLS) and told no one - hence important email never got out.  I only know this is happening for gmail but it probably this is an issue with other email systems that use this port too.

If this rejected email is happening to you. Go to gmail settings / Accounts / your sfu.ca account and go through the settings making the port 25 using  systems TLS. (or like minded settings on your non SFU email system)

It would have been nice when IT does this that they tell us - better yet that they give us a good email system (OWS is terrible in so many ways). Yes there is an issue with not using a Canada only email system - checking with my students, almost all do, mainly because how bad OWS is (and in my tests OWS has data that does not stay in Canada too).
