TSSU Bargaining Update - October 12

October 12, 2023

SFU and TSSU enter into mediation tomorrow, Friday, October 13. In mediation, public communication from parties at the bargaining table is typically limited. We want to assure you that we are committed to sharing what we are able to during that time.

After concluding two days of scheduled bargaining on Wednesday, October 11 and Thursday, October 12, the university is hopeful that a fair agreement with TSSU can be reached through the mediation process.

SFU cares deeply about our community and recognizes the disruptions that this labour action is having on our students, faculty, and staff, as well as TSSU members. The university has asked TSSU again to consider pausing the work stoppage and picket lines while the parties work towards an agreement through mediation. This would allow TSSU members to get paid and students and faculty to resume their regular learning and teaching activities. TSSU has not responded to this second request. The university continues to work to reduce impacts of strike action wherever possible and instructors have been modifying course structures in recognition of strike-related impacts.

SFU’s bargaining approach is focused on finding common ground. The university has shown flexibility on several of TSSU’s fundamental issues within the scope of the collective agreement and the Province’s Shared Recovery Mandate. It has also proposed compensation consistent with a living wage and the maximum allowable public sector wage increases under the mandate.

Updates will continue to be available on the Collective Bargaining website.
