TERM MARKS

Final Exam Marks If you want to see your paper, I will be available on Friday Dec 16 from 13:00 to 14:00.
My room is ASB 10929. Then I will send your final grades to department.

Course syllabus: Here is the course syllabus subject to minor but not major change. Most of the material will be from the text. Topics below will be covered as time permits; we will probably not have time to cover everything.

1) Structures and Algorithms

2) Generating Elementary Combinatorial Objects

3) Counting (integer partitions, set partitions, Catalan families)

4) Backtracking Algorithms

5) Branch and Bound

6) Heuristic Search Algorithms

Assignments: Sharing ideas is fine and working in groups is recommended but do make sure you write up your final answers on your own so they express your own approach and notation. Copying another's answers to pass as your own is an infringement of university rules and leads to a grade of zero for the whole assignments (it also stunts the development of your mathematical ability - don't shortchange yourself!). There will be five assignments this term. The schedule of the assignment due dates are as follows:

September 29, October 13, October 27, November 10 and November 24

Assignment 1-------- Solutions

Assignment 2 ------- Solutions

Assignment 3 ------- Solutions

Assignment 4 ------- Solutions

Assignment 5 ------- Solutions

Matrices for Assignment 5

Midterm: There is a 50 minutes exam sometime during the October 24 to November 7.

Final Examination: This is a three-hour exam scheduled by the University and will take place sometime during the examination period December 7-17, 2005. It is the responsibility of each student to be available at the time of the examination. In particular, no travel plans should be made until the examination schedule is published.

Grading Scheme:

Assignments        - 15%

Midterm                - 35%

Final Exam          - 50%

IMPORTANT DATES: October 11 is the last day for undergraduates to drop courses except under special procedures applicable in extenuating circumstances. November 30 is the last day for undergraduates to drop courses under special procedures applicable in extenuating circumstances.
