COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Introduction to Interpretation Skills
This course starts with the basics by giving students an overview of consecutive interpretation, which is the most widely used form of interpretation. With a unique course design and an interactive learning environment, this course helps students advance their interpretation skills through a wide variety of activities, including shadowing, role-play, sight translation, critical analysis, number conversion and note-taking.
Translation Practice
Translation Practice enhances students’ interpreting skills by building a strong foundation in bilingual syntax analysis. Through written translation exercises and projects, students learn to be precise and concise in transferring meanings between the two languages.
Context Interpretation
Context Interpretation class provides fundamental training in interpreting in a particular industry or technical field. Emphasis is placed on industries where there is a current demand for trained interpreters.
News Interpretation
This course utilizes television news, magazines and newspapers to enhance students’ listening comprehension and cultural understanding. In this class, students will have the opportunity to practice translating news in summary and in detail.
Tape Interpretation
Videotapes and audiotapes of documentaries, speeches, and panel will be used to simulate interpreting occasions for students to practice consecutive interpretation. Tapes are also a vehicle to expose students to knowledge of different disciplines and industries.
Cultural Studies
Language and culture are inseparable. In order for students to be comfortable and competent in interacting with native speakers of English, this course is offered to enhance the cultural sensitivity of interpreter-students and provide them with the political, economic, social and background necessary to their understanding of North American society.
Spoken English Enhancement
This course is offered to address the specific needs of the students in upgrading their oral English fluency — pronunciation, intonation, rhythm and stress, which is essential to preparing them for more advanced interpretation training. In this highly interactive class. students will have an opportunity to hone their presentation skills by giving speeches and monologues and by participating in interviews, debates and role-plays.
Written English Enhancement
Like the Spoken English Enhancement course, the Written English Enhancement course is offered to address the specific needs of the students in upgrading their written English skills. Writing skills are developed through a variety of assignments and activities focusing on both mechanics and style.
