Research on Sea Ducks

Along with studies of the importance of herring spawn as a habitat feature for migrating surf scoters (see link), we have been investigating the role of herring spawn as a nutrient source for wintering surf scoters, white-winged scoters, and harlequin ducks.  We have documented distributional, numerical, physiological, and behavioural responses to herring spawn, and are considering the implications for subsequent annual cycle stages such as migration and reproduction.
