PDFs and Web browsers

Does your browser download each PDF rather than opening it directly? Each browser has its own settings to control how PDFs open from a web page and you can change your browser preferences. Most browsers now open PDFs in their own viewers, but you may need to change its preferences.

Depending on your browser, either right click or hold down the control key (Windows) or command key (mac) to open the PDF in a new tab. This will speed things up if you need to open & view several PDFs quickly. One or the other will download the PDF if you need to save or open it in a different viewer.

Firefox
Click the menu button new fx menu Menu and choose Preferences. In the General panel, navigate to the Applications section. Find Portable Document Format (PDF) in the list and click on the entry to select it. Click on the drop-down arrow in the Action column for the above entry. Change to Preview in Firefox to use the built-in PDF Viewer. (You may prefer to open with Preview, Acrobat may have issues)). Now, in the future if you want to download a PDF rather than open it in Firefox just right click the link.

Chrome
On a PC, at the top right in Chrome, More and then Settings. On a Mac, under the word 'Chrome' in the menu choose 'Preferences'.
At the bottom, click Advanced.
Under "Privacy and security," click Content settings.
Near the bottom, click PDF documents.
Turn off Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome.
Chrome will now open PDFs automatically when you click them.
