Associate-Provost, Teaching and Learning, UBC VP Academic/Provost

As Associate Provost, Teaching and Learning, Dr. Bates is responsible for teaching, learning and technology support to faculty and departments creating credit and non-credit learning opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and lifelong learning at UBC. The portfolio also contributes to new program approval and quality assurance overseen by the office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic. He is also a tenured Professor of Teaching in the Physics and Astronomy department.

Adriaan de Jager

Associate Vice President, Government Relations and Community Engagement

As Associate Vice-President, Government Relations and Community Engagement, Adriaan works with municipal, regional, provincial and federal levels of government to promote and enhance strategic relations and communicate UBC’s vision and priorities. As part of the university’s mission to enhance engaged scholarship, research, and public engagement, Adriaan also works with UBC Community Engagement to build respectful relationships with off-campus communities and oversees UBC Connects, a new public lecture series featuring esteemed global thought leaders discussing the world’s most pressing issues.

Angela Towle

Angela ‘s interest in and commitment to university-community engagement led to her appointment in February 2013 as Academic Director for the UBC Learning Exchange with a responsibility to strengthen engagement between UBC and communities in the Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. She also co-directs Patient and Community Partnership for Education (UBC Health) and is an Associate Professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine.

Kat Cureton

Acting Manager, Community Engagement

Kat is Acting Manager in the UBC Community Engagement office which provides strategy and support to UBC’s community engagement efforts. She focuses on building respectful relationships between local communities and UBC as part of the university’s mission to support excellence in engaged scholarship, research, and public engagement. After seven years working in the not-for-profit sector, Kat joined UBC School of Kinesiology in 2014 as a sessional instructor and then UBC Community Engagement in 2016.

Ryan Brown

Advisor, Community Engagement

Ryan is Advisor with the UBC Community Engagement office. He works with partners on- and off-campus to foster innovative and progressive community-university engagement policy, strategic planning and implementation. In his role, Ryan prioritizes a focus on mutual benefit for UBC and community partners, a balanced approach to qualitative and quantitative methods, and a commitment to collaboration, ethical decision-making and strategic change.
