City Program director honoured as SFU Newsmaker of the Year

February 23, 2023

Congratulations to City Program director Andy Yan on earning his second SFU Newsmaker of the Year Award.

Each year, SFU recognizes faculty and staff for excellence in media relations, online engagement, and communications strategy. Yan previously won the SFU Media Newsmaker of the Year Award in 2018, and now he’s been named as the 2022 SFU Social Media Newsmaker of the Year—thanks to his 40,000 tweets and the unparalleled level of online engagement he’s generated on all topics related to city building.

While he feels honoured by the award, Yan explains that being active on social media is just part of his job: “Social media presents another avenue and platform through which the SFU City Program can connect, inform and serve our community.”

For Yan, engaging with the online community offers a direct way to share his expertise—and infect others with his own deep curiosity about complex urban issues.

“Social media is one tool and platform that is shaping our changing world,” he notes. “It presents an opportunity to share news about our programming, as well as articles, ideas and research that shape my own understandings of the lives of cities.”
