Giving Voice to a Diversity of Opinion
Frank Newman, Director, The Futures Project, Policy for Higher Education
in a Changing World, Brown University, Providence, RI
Universities are privileged institutions in our society. They are
the manifestation of our better sideorganizations beyond the
crass interests of the marketplace devoted to enhancing the public
good. One responsibility is to serve as the setting for unfettered
research, teaching and debate about the urgent and often controversial
issues that roil society. In recent years, however, universities
have become more cautious, less often the site of consciously structured
debate, their leaders less willing to use the powerful pulpit at
their disposal to call society's attention to urgent problems.
The causes of this erosion are complex but at the root is the push
for ever greater sources of revenue. The public wants access. Public
authorities want greater responsiveness and accountability. Everyone
wants higher rates of achievement and completion. How can policy
be changed to encourage change and improvement? How can institutions
respond to the new and more demanding climate within which they
find themselves?
Frank Newman is Director of the Futures Project: Policy for Higher
Education in a Changing World and a Visiting Professor of Public
Policy and Sociology at Brown University. He is also a Visiting
Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University.
