The Public Health Agency of Canada Launches What We Heard Report on the Healthy Living Roundtables

January 25, 2024

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has released their report on the Healthy Living Roundtables, a public engagement initiative conducted in partnership with the Centre for Dialogue.

The Healthy Living Roundtables brought together participants to explore the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthy living, with a focus on aspects such as physical activity and healthy eating.

The Centre for Dialogue led the planning and implementation of the roundtables on behalf of PHAC, which included roundtable facilitation, logistical support for stakeholder correspondence, technical support, simultaneous translation and the development of a final report.

Healthy Living in a Post-pandemic World

COVID-19 had strong and lasting impacts on the health of our societies and still impacts our individual lifestyles and habits today. The pandemic exacerbated existing inequities along with creating new challenges and highlighted how the influence of social determinants—such as economic status, housing security, discrimination or neighbourhood safety—can severely impact individual and community health. The roundtables were organized as virtual discussions that would provide stakeholders with an opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions in an informal, accessible and conversational setting. Participants were also able to share their thoughts with senior leaders in PHAC and Adam van Koeverden, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and to the Minister of Sport.

Building Connections Through Complexity

The roundtables were designed to generate conversation for various sectors supporting healthy living in Canada and on ways of working together in this complex environment. The discussions focused on adapting environments and supporting healthy behaviours to reduce the risk of chronic disease and support Canadians’ overall health and well-being within the post-pandemic era.

The roundtables also coincided with the five-year anniversary of the policy framework on physical activity in Canada. Topics were based on the broad areas of focus of the framework’s common vision:

  • Partnership and alliance building
  • Public engagement and knowledge mobilization
  • Healthy living – a focus on equity-deserving populations
  • Creating a cultural norm of physical activity and healthy eating
  • Built environment and active transportation
