Cultural Tourism?

Towards a sustainable future

Fuga has all the ingredients: A pristinely beautiful island. Charming villages. A community intimately familiar with the flora and fauna on every inch of the island. Traditional healers. A prehistoric mystique that's unique. Numerous archaeological sites. An underground network of sacred caves. Ancient burial jars. Chinese ceremonial jars. "Fuga - the missing link in the land bridge" (Professor Uy). With cultural tourism, the Fugans would be the stewards of the island. They would protect the ecology for future generations. With good boats, they could police the waters, keep the dynamiters away for good, and give the damaged reefs a chance to heal, and the decimated fish stocks the time they need to replenish themselves.

"If there is to be an economy of meaning and purpose, it must serve
and nurture the aspirations of the poor and uneducated . . . Going forward
will someday mean replacing what has been lost."
from The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken
