Conclusion
It is conceded that the model could be improved upon such as including
ocean temperature data that is important to rockfish stock rebuilding.
However, the model provides adequate input to suggest an area that will
have more chance of succeeding in rebuilding rockfish populations. There
are also socio-economical and potentially political aspects of this issue
which is impossible to model. All these factors determine the final outcome
of the designation of a marine protected area (MPA). However, the benefit
of a MPA is very well documented already. Marine reserves protect against
inherent uncertainties of any fisheries management strategies, act as
buffer against catastrophic decline, and may aid in sustaining and possibly
enhancing stocks.
