Data Sources
A digital elevation model coverage of the Vancouver/ North Vancouver region was obtained via the Vines server of the Geography 355 SFU SISLAB. The LAWIPROG-model constrains valid analysis to a digital elevation model of maximum cell width of 25 meters. The data provided met the constraint and consequently was utilized for the North vancouver analysis.

The focus of the analysis was limited to the mountainous region of the North Vancouver.  The determination of specific peaks required point digitizing of topographic map coverages to place hazard regions in context.  Digitizing was accomplished with the use of the topographic map coverages obtained at a scale of 1:50000.

The LAWIPROG-model was developed by Heiri Leuthold and Britta Allgower of the Division of Spatial Data Handling, Department of Geography, University of Zurich, Winterthurerstrasse 190, CH-8057 Zurich, Switzerland.  The model was presented in October 1996 at the International Snow Science Workshop, Banff Canada. The proceedings were published on behalf of ISSW96 by the Canadian Avalanche Association. Supporting hazard level classification used to demonstrate reclassification weighting are modifications of diagrams presented within the publishment. Diagram reproduction was accomplished with the use of the Freehand 8 software.

Determination of the optimal back country ski regions required the as data sources derived hazard level layers as well as a line vector trails layer also obtained via the SISLAB resources.
