Data Collection
Most of my data was collected by myself. For the project I went
and got a 1:25, 000 map of Burnaby from SFU's map library and scanned it
at 600 dpi in colour. This resulted in a 20 megabyte file. Other scan resolution
and black and white scanning proved inefectual. I also acquired and scanned
a rough map of the trails around Burnaby Mountain. This was a very simple
map and so was scanned at 200 dpi in black and white. I then, using ArcView
digitized the contours of Burnaby mountain from the top down to where the
relevance stopped. Usually where the trails ran out because they ran into
roads off the mountain. This was a very time consuming part of the project.
The contours were at 25 foot intervals and for the most part. The entire
contour around the mountain was digitized. This meant that about 40 contours
were digitized with between 50 to over a 1000 vertexes on some of them.
The contours were digitized in line mode. The end result was just under
60, 000 vertices. I also digitized the roads and trails around the mountain.
The didn't take any time at all in comparison. I assigned a height field
to each of the contour lines and a trail type to the roads and trails.
The purpose of the latter was to allow easy distinguishment between the
roads, access roads and trails.
