Sustainable Energy Engineering master's student in the Faculty of Applied Sciences

I have completed my Bachelor's in chemical engineering at Sharif University of Technology in Iran in 2019. Then, I started my Master’s in Sustainable Energy Engineering at Simon Fraser University in May 2021.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

I believe that doing a Master’s degree in the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering at SFU is a praiseworthy experience for me because it gives me the chance to learn new advanced techniques and skills while taking advantage of interacting with the growing energy-related industry in Surrey.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

Broadly, my research area is in interfacial engineering. Interfaces are everywhere! Basically, wherever two states of matter, such as liquid and solid, interact with each other, interfacial phenomena come into play. The most familiar example is hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. Have you ever noticed that how water droplets easily roll off the plant leaves but get absorbed on cotton clothes? I am now working on improving the interfacial properties, like adhesion, between different layers of solar cells to enhance the total efficiency of solar cells.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I am greatly enjoying the opportunity of working with industrial partners at SFU because I can see the application of my research in the real world, which makes me very excited.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

I have been fortunate to receive Special Graduate Entrance Scholarship and MNT Award-CMC Microsystems. They basically covered most of my living costs and research cost which is amazing, because MNT award provided me with the chance to test my novel ideas without being worried about the cost and this is when creativity comes in!
