"My program provides a safe learning and working environment. I was surrounded by very supportive people, be it staff, faculty or other colleagues in the program."
Thomas Vigié
Economics master’s student in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences
I come from the Basque country, where I started my studies. I was very fortunate to continue my studies at SFU, where I met many great people and could complete my degree in the best environment. The degree allowed me to get a teaching position at SFU (my dream job!), so I am very grateful for that.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
I kind of randomly applied to some universities, and SFU was the one that offered me the best opportunity!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
I try to develop statistical methods that provide more accurate answers to Economics-related questions, such as the impact of a tax on different agents in society, the economic impacts of public investments, etc.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
I met amazing people, with whom I shared struggles but also rewarding moments. SFU provided the best working environment, as I was fully funded by the University and had access to great facilities. I learnt from great instructors, and my relationship with my supervisor was very good. Without all of that, it would have been impossible for me to finish my degree, hence I am very grateful to SFU for what it provided me.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
I received a Teaching Assistant award, as well as the Employee achievement award by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for my work as a Teaching Assistant. I also received the Peter Kennedy fellowship, which funded a full year of research in preparation for the academic job market. These awards helped me focus on my degree without having to worry about my financial situation. Having that out of the way is huge, any graduate student will confirm!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?
My program provides a safe learning and working environment. I was surrounded by very supportive people, be it staff, faculty or other colleagues in the program.
