Geography Master's Student in the Faculty of Environment

I am an avid camper, hiker, and canoeist. Before starting my MSc I worked as a canoe guide for many years in Ontario and Manitoba. I credit these experiences for my interest and drive to pursue research focusing on rivers.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

I did my undergrad at SFU and worked on my Honours thesis under the supervision of Dr. Jeremy Venditti. Upon completion of this I was really excited to be given an opportunity to continue working with the River Dynamics Lab on a project that I already felt connected to and passionate about.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I am working to identify locations along the Fraser River that act as potential barriers to spawning salmon at different flow levels based on surface velocity. Basically, I am trying to see where the water speed is so high that salmon may be slowed down or struggle to swim past these sections.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I am really enjoying the amount of time that I have been able to spend doing fieldwork along the Fraser River! The canyons are gorgeous and such a different environment than any other that I have spent time in.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
