Office for Aboriginal Peoples

The Office for Aboriginal Peoples (OAP) was established in 2009 and its first Director, William G. Lindsay, began his tenure in January 2010. The mandate of the OAP is to take the lead on implementing the Aboriginal Strategic Plan at Simon Fraser University.

The Aboriginal Strategic Plan is a comprehensive document covering all things “Aboriginal” at SFU. This plan was initiated by a First Nations University-Wide Coordinating Committee which was chaired by Dr. Lisa Sterling, who also served as special advisor to the Vice-President, Academic.

The Aboriginal Strategic Plan was passed by university senate in 2007. Although the Office for Aboriginal Peoples was yet to be established, there were long established, new, and ongoing Aboriginal initiatives, services, and programs in place all over the university. The mandate of the OAP is to support these initiatives and to break ground on new ones.
