DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NEW VPPEI PORTFOLIO

SFU is pleased to announce the hiring of two senior leaders for the Office of the Vice-President, People, Equity and Inclusion. Christina Medland, who comes to SFU after 17 years with the City of Vancouver, will join SFU as the executive director, people and organization development. Chris Hatty, who has worked at SFU for the past 15 years and has been serving as interim executive director, human resources for the past year, will take on the role of executive director, human resources and labour relations. Both roles start June 6th.

 

HELPING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS LIVE AND STUDY IN CANADA

If you’re a student on your own in a foreign country, it’s nice to know that someone is here to assist you. For many students, that person is Judy Shabtai, program coordinator for SFU’s English Language and Culture program. Read about the steps she takes to help international students navigate immigration rules to stay and study in Canada.

 

Meet Joanna Woo, lecturer in the Department of Physics and director of the Trottier Observatory. 

Learn more about her journey to becoming a scientist, what she loves most about her work and the road to making academia a diverse and inclusive space. 

Recent research by SFU communications professor Ahmed Al-Rawi explores how Google’s automatic suggestions—perceived as neutral by the general public—are in fact reproducing and promoting prejudice, hate and conspiracy online, particularly when it comes to conspiracy theorists.

AGRITECH TOWNHALL

SFU has recently received $10 million from the Pacific Economic Development Canada to establish an AGtech Innovation Sandbox. The funding will be used to support small and medium-sized businesses to scale up and commercialize agricultural technology (agritech) in B.C.

The Taking Action! speaker series—part of an SFU partnership with the Resilience BC Anti-Racism Network—continues with Sarah Augustine, author of The Land Is Not Empty: Following Jesus in Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery

In this instalment, she will explore how we can move away from a Eurocentric worldview towards an Indigenous view of interdependency and sustainability for all life.

Join SFU and UBC for a public symposium, ‘Community Making and Black Flourishing Through the Scarborough Charter.' This symposium is part of the inaugural Inter-Institutional Forum of the Scarborough National Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education, hosted by UBC.
