IMPROVING THE LIVES OF TWO-SPIRIT PEOPLE

Meet Harlan Pruden, a PhD student in Faculty of Health Sciences, who has co-launched the first research lab to focus exclusively on Two-Spirit people, communities and experiences. Previously, Pruden was twice appointed to Barack Obama’s Presidential Advisory Council on HIV and AIDS.

 

SFU RESEARCH UNCOVERS FIRST PHYSIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF SLEEPING SHARKS

Comparative sleep physiologist Mike Kelly, a postdoctoral research fellow in SFU’s Circadian Rhythms and Sleep Lab and Translational Neuroscience Lab, has found the first evidence that sharks take a break from tracking prey to catch a few winks. Kelly specializes in sleep among aquatic creatures, from sharks to crocodiles.

 

REPLAY: WALKING THE RED ROAD

As an ambassador campus for the Moose Hide Campaign, SFU hosted a meaningful conversation between incredible leaders on March 4. Discussion focused on the realities of gender-based violence in communities with reflection about the spiritual pathway to wellness and healing: The Red Road. For those unable to attend, a live recording is available.

 

SFU's AQ Plaza Renewal and Residence Phase 1 projects have won silver prizes in the Vancouver Regional Construction Association 2021 Awards. Winners are selected for their use of innovative techniques, new materials and/or exceptional project management.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

UPDATE ON FACE COVERING ORDER

Last week Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the end of the face coverings order effective March 11, 2022 and this information was shared with the SFU community in an email from SFU's VP-Academic and Provost, Catherine Dauvergne. The province has now deemed that masks are a personal choice in indoor public spaces. SFU encourages mask use on our campuses at this time and particularly in spaces where we are in close proximity. Please be understanding and compassionate of people’s individual circumstances and choices.

 

PERIMENOPAUSE OR MENOPAUSE RESEARCH SUBJECTS NEEDED

The SFU Pain Studies Lab is looking for participants for a 2.5-hour online workshop to explore the lived experiences of perimenopause and menopause. If you are someone or know someone who is undergoing the menopause transition (natural or induced) or if you work in fields related to women's health and menopause care and would like to participate, please contact Bhairavi Warke at bwarke@sfu.ca or call 604-710-0971. Participants will receive $20 for their time and contribution.
