SFU: WHAT'S NEXT?

WHAT COULD WE STOP DOING TO MAKE ROOM FOR RENEWED PRIORITIES?

Phase one of SFU: What's Next? comes to a close on May 1 and several big ideas are emerging. But it's hard to imagine making room for these new ideas when we have so much going on already. What could we take off the to-do list to create space for what matters most to our community? Some ideas shared so far include:

  • Doing away with hardcopy forms
  • Re-thinking existing approaches to meetings
  • Conducting fewer, more targeted consultations

Head over to ThoughtExchange to read and rate these thoughts and others, and to share your own ideas about what we could do differently before the discussion closes on Sunday.

FEDERAL FUNDING ADVANCES SFU WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY LAB

WearTech Labs, a new core facility hosted at SFU's Surrey campus, has received $1.8 million from the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada to help invent, test and create wearable technology that improves the quality of our lives.

Wearable technologies are personalized systems that have up-to-date and accurate monitoring of a person’s health and current body condition. They are not only devices such as smart watches and fitness trackers but also exoskeletons, earphones and shoes.

EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF PANDEMIC RESPONSES ON MENTAL HEALTH

A global study on responses to the pandemic finds worse mental health trajectories in countries that attempted to control COVID-19 transmission with stricter public health restrictions than those that tried to suppress or eliminate COVID-19 transmission.

The research team, led by SFU psychology associate professor Lara Aknin, note that effective policies to contain the pandemic must be accompanied by strategies and resources to address the adverse impacts on mental health.

In this week’s Scholarly Impact, SFU Beedie professor Elicia Maine discusses the importance of early-stage translational supports in enabling academic scientists and entrepreneurs to innovate and provide solutions to local and global crises.

In the latest podcast episode, SFU School for the Contemporary Arts assistant professor Eldritch Priest explores the potential in nonsense and failure, the phenomenon of the earworm and his journey from musicianship to employing theory.
